FAQs, Links & Resources for Cleared Employees and Applicants for Clearance

We’ve provided some helpful links with answers to common questions

For DoD security clearance applicants, visit the Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency FOIA and Privacy Office site for access to the information used to make clearance decisions about you.
A mental health condition does not, in and of itself, prevent you from holding a clearance. Take a look at the article "Does Receiving Psychological Health Care Affect Security Clearance?" and "Information on Question 21.”
A psychological evaluation is a specialized information gathering process usually involving a review of background information, conversations with relevant third parties (e.g., a medical provider), psychological testing, observations, and a structured interview. The process usually takes two to three hours of your time. We approach our evaluations as a meeting between professionals so we will always treat you with respect and strive to make the process as collegial as possible. Since psychologists are not mind readers or lie detectors, it is always best to approach the evaluation in an open and honest manner. This helps prevent misinterpretation of your information in a way that might be more derogatory than would otherwise be the case.
The evaluation is typically funded by the person or organization requesting it. The government agency with which you are affiliated will typically pay for the cost of the evaluation when it is a requirement of the security clearance investigation. In the case of an appeal, your attorney will pay for the cost of the evaluation and will pass that cost to you. If you seek an independent evaluation on your own, you will be responsible for the costs.
The Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency site has accurate, up to date information about the process. One of the best collections of FAQs about the security clearance process is found here at ClearanceJobs.
